The science behind Athena

Built on the fundamentals, not on a hunch.

Athena Forms™ does not invent its own safety metrics. It stands on the fundamentals, the hard-won lessons of generations of safety work, applied to the data you already collect. The same discipline of continuous improvement your best safety people live by, now reading every record. Here is what is under the hood.

Gravity Motion Mechanical Electrical Pressure Chemical Thermal Biological Radiation Noise ENERGY WHEEL Scissor lift

Athena is based on science.

Energy tells you what can kill

Haddon’s energy theory and the Energy Wheel: nearly every serious injury traces back to an uncontrolled release of hazardous energy. Athena reads the energy in play, not just the words on the form.

You can see it: the Energy Wheel, ten energy sources, at the top of this page.

Engineer it out, do not just retrain

The hierarchy of controls: the strongest fix removes or designs out the hazard, and training and PPE are the weakest. Athena reads where each corrective action lands on that ladder.

On the site: closed is not fixed.

Verify the control, then verify it again

Critical control verification: the job is to confirm the control is in place and working, not to file that it exists. Assurance decays over time, so verification has to recur.

What you see: the controls that should have stopped it, and whether they held.

Instrument the system, not the worker

Leading indicators over lagging ones: count the exposure and the precursor, not only the recordable. A low injury rate is not proof of a safe system, it is often just a quiet one.

What you get: the signal that moves before the outcome does.

The hard part is the words.

Most safety data is narrative: the comment field, the report, the investigation. Off-the-shelf AI cannot read that reliably for what actually matters, the energy in play and the conditions around it. The thing that makes any of this work is an engine that turns those messy, free-text records into a consistent, grounded reading. Here is how we build it.

1 · Start from the fundamentals

We begin with the published science your field already trusts, not metrics we invented.

2 · Our model reads the narrative

Our own model, built for safety and run on our own infrastructure, reads each record for the energy and the systemic context, against a fixed set of categories, so the reading stays consistent instead of improvised. The Energy Wheel is one of those sets you can see; the rest sit underneath.

3 · We hold it to a measured bar

The model is not trusted on faith. Each energy is checked against a batch of real cases it has never seen before it ships, and a safety expert reviews and signs off before it goes live. Nothing ships unproven, and we'll show you the numbers as they land.

4 · It holds, and it compounds

A proven reading becomes part of the system: repeatable, and shown in the open with the reasoning behind it. The coverage grows the same careful way, one proven piece at a time, so Athena gets sharper over time without drifting. The AI is the chisel. Your expert holds it.

We train on the process, not on your data. Your records are read, never used to teach the model. The intelligence lives in the method, grounded in the fundamentals and proven before it ships, so your data stays yours.

The lens Athena reads through.

Just culture, not blame

Honest error gets coaching, at-risk behavior gets redirected, and reckless behavior gets enforced. The system and the pressures get examined too, including from the top. No worker is ever scored or ranked.

Potential over outcome

A recordable counts what happened. SIFp, the serious-injury-and-fatality potential, exposes what could have. Athena reads for the potential whether or not anyone was hurt this time.

Work as done, not work as imagined

The gap between the written procedure and what the floor actually does is where risk lives. Athena reads the narrative for that gap, and for the pressure that opened it.

BBS and HOP, both

Behavior-based safety and human and organizational performance pull in different directions. The leading-indicator science is what both are trying to serve. Athena does not make you pick a side.

The model is the tool. Your team is the authority.

Athena drafts what it sees and the reasoning behind it. Your safety lead accepts, edits, or overrides. Every call is theirs. The science is the foundation, the AI does the reading, and a person decides.
